Permission To Do Less
There used to be strict rules for TV shows:
- Episodes had to be 22 or 44 minutes (to fill broadcast time slots when commercials were added)
- Seasons had to be 22 episodes long and come out once per year, usually in September
But now?
There are entire seasons that last only 6 episodes, and I've seen episodes that top out at 7 minutes!
Things evolve, and YouTube and podcasting has done the same thing.
The idea that you HAD to publish a new video or episode every single week is that you would become a habit in people's lives.
"On Tuesday morning I get in the car to drive to work and listen to the newest episode of "Claire's Awesome Podcast."
The problem now is that there are SO many podcasts and YouTube channels that consumer behavior has changed. While there are some people who listen to every episode of a show, many have shifted to pick and choose based on topic.
While this might sound like a bad thing, it actually releases us from feeling like we need to publish every single week.
When I was publishing every single week I got frustrated because I would be releasing these amazing interviews, and I felt like I had to shift to promoting the newest one before the previous one got enough love!
So here is your permission to break the "rules" and publish less frequently, after you are up and running.
Because there are advantages to publishing every week when you start...
- You'll figure out what works and what doesn't much faster
- You'll get better at creating the content much faster
- You'll likely grow faster (especially on YouTube)
But once you're up and running, you can move to a lighter publishing schedule and still see big results.
