Permission to do less

From Jerry Potter's Lab

I spent most of Sunday sick in bed, trading off between sleeping - and falling asleep to The Invasion on Apple TV+.

In my stupor, I noticed how TV episode lengths are now all over the place.

In a single season, this show had episodes that ranged from only 33 minutes long up to 58 minutes long.

Clearly the rules of TV have shifted, and the same thing can be applied to what we do in our businesses.

Read on for more...

Permission To Do Less

There used to be strict rules for TV shows:

  • Episodes had to be 22 or 44 minutes (to fill broadcast time slots when commercials were added)
  • Seasons had to be 22 episodes long and come out once per year, usually in September

But now?

There are entire seasons that last only 6 episodes, and I've seen episodes that top out at 7 minutes!

Things evolve, and YouTube and podcasting has done the same thing.

The idea that you HAD to publish a new video or episode every single week is that you would become a habit in people's lives.

"On Tuesday morning I get in the car to drive to work and listen to the newest episode of "Claire's Awesome Podcast."

The problem now is that there are SO many podcasts and YouTube channels that consumer behavior has changed. While there are some people who listen to every episode of a show, many have shifted to pick and choose based on topic.

While this might sound like a bad thing, it actually releases us from feeling like we need to publish every single week.

When I was publishing every single week I got frustrated because I would be releasing these amazing interviews, and I felt like I had to shift to promoting the newest one before the previous one got enough love!

So here is your permission to break the "rules" and publish less frequently, after you are up and running.

Because there are advantages to publishing every week when you start...

  1. You'll figure out what works and what doesn't much faster
  2. You'll get better at creating the content much faster
  3. You'll likely grow faster (especially on YouTube)

But once you're up and running, you can move to a lighter publishing schedule and still see big results.

BEHIND THE SCENES πŸ‘€

The Secret Got Leaked

Last week I ran a private mini-workshop called The YouTube-iest Week Ever to show other online entrepreneurs how to grow on YouTube in 2025.

Then on Thursday I invited them to join the beta round of a brand new program, The YouTube Entrepreneur System, or Y.E.S. for short.

Something odd happened yesterday...

People who were not in last week's workshop (and therefore shouldn't have known about the new program) started signing up for Y.E.S.

Apparently people started sharing the private link with their friends!

Two takeaways from this:

  1. People don't necessarily have to have a warm-up period (like my workshop last week) before they are ready to buy a bigger offer. If they are ready, they are ready!
  2. When an offer is good enough, people will tell their friends about it.

To be fair to everyone, if you'd like to take a peek at my new YouTube program, click the button below.

But be aware that enrollment closes to the public tonight at 11:59pm PST.

Sending you a digital high-five! βœ‹

For Growth AND Freedom I wore a bathrobe on stage yesterday at the Social Media Marketing World conference in San Diego... Jerry Potter wearing a bathrobe on stage at Social Media Marketing World in San Diego, California. And apparently it was persuasive because numerous attendees told me they've decided to launch a podcast for their business and put it on YouTube. (FYI the bathrobe did serve a purpose, but I shave to wait until next week's newsletter to share why). If you're curious to learn...

"How am I supposed to sell when it feels like the world is on fire?" A friend asked me that very blunt question last week, and I've been thinking about it ever since. In fact, this isn't the email I was going to write today - but I think it's so important to talk about this. The way to look at this that I'm going to share applies no matter what the chaos is - whether it's politics in the US, people recovering from Cyclone Alfred in Australia, or even if the chaos is in your personal life.
