The Hidden Power Of Non-Work Activities
I didn't learn this until I started working less, but I believe every business will grow faster if the owner gives themselves Thinking Time.
There's a reason CEO's of big corporations have time to just think, and as the CEO of your own business - you should find a way to do the same.
For me, I go hiking 4-5 times per week.
Before this I'd sit at my desk, trying to solve problems for HOURS and often end up right where I started.
But since starting this activity 4 years ago, everything in my business has grown faster. I'm convinced that the solutions to all my problems are in the mountains near my house - I just have to go out and get them!
If you want to set up official Thinking Time in your business, here are 3 tips that make a big difference...
Autopilot Activities:
Pick an activity where your brain is required, but it should be an activity it can do on autopilot.
With hiking, my brain has to navigate the steps on the trail so I don't fall on my face, but it that task doesn't dominate my thinking.
Walking or running can work, but when you're dodging cars your brain has to be slightly more alert.
Remove Phone Temptation:
Try an activity where it's inconvenient to have your phone out.
Our brains are obsessed with checking our screens. That's one of the reasons it's so hard to solve problems at a computer. The moment we wonder about something, we immediately look it up!
Skip The Headphones:
I used to immediately put on headphones anytime I was walking or hiking.
Why not, right? I could use that time to catch up on podcasts and learn!
One night I went for a walk and forgot my headphones. Since I didn't want to be that guy blasting music in public on a crappy smartphone speaker, I walked without listening to anything.
At first, the silence felt really uncomfortable.
But as my mind started wandering I realized how powerful it is. That's when you will get your best ideas, and solve impossible problems.
If you don't have it now, build some Thinking Time into your schedule this week.
And if the silence feels uncomfortable, push through it.
