Still can't believe this happened...
Last week my doorbell rang and I answered it.
(This is the unsolicited DM of the real world).
The stranger greets me with MY name (just like online) and starts telling me about the things he's helping "my neighbors" with.
(In the online space they usually start telling us about all of the mutual acquaintances and people "just like us" that they've helped).
I politely explain that I'm at work (I was) and wish him a nice day, closing the door.
As I head back to my desk he started VIOLENTLY banging on the door, "Come on Jerry, I can help you!"
(Online this is the aggressive follow up messages after politely declining).
Since then I've kept thinking, "Did he think I was going to want to work with him after that?" Even if I needed what he was offering I can't imagine I would.
How do we decide what marketing tactics are okay to use in our business and which ones aren't?
For me, it's never been as simple as what feels right and what doesn't, because things evolve and change, don't they?
Society is full of things that were considered acceptable in the past but definitely aren't now - and the reverse happens too!
And sometimes as entrepreneurs we can get desperate for sales, and what feels right can shift into a gray area.
Here's how I keep it simple (in case it's helpful):
Think of someone in your life that you care about, and that you'd be furious if someone took advantage of them.
Then think about whatever the marketing "tactic" is you're considering, and imagine someone using it on them.
Are you okay with it?
If so, then great! If not, don't use it.
For me, that person is my mom, and she has been the perfect barometer.
