How AI is making us LESS productive πŸ€¦πŸ»β€β™‚οΈ

High Leverage Beats Hustle

I was hiking this morning and this thought wouldn't leave me alone:

What if AI is making some of us less productive?

It reminds me of something powerful from James Clear's Atomic Habits.

More on how AI is slowing me down continued below...

How To Stop Delaying YouTube Success

Growing on YouTube may be the most delayed goal in entrepreneurship.

Sometimes we delay because we're scared (that's what I did).

But most of the time we delay because it feels like we don't have time yet.

I created a way to grow a lead-generating YouTube channel in only 90 minutes a week β€” so you can start next month instead of next year.

See how in a free workshop I'm streaming this week.

Whether you are thinking about starting a channel, or you already have one and it's burning you out, I'll show you how to maximize your ROE (Return On Effort), so every minute you invest in YouTube is worth it.

How AI Is Slowing Me Down

(Continued from above)

AI is available everywhere. You can use it on your laptop, in your browser, in your writing tools.

It's even on our phones and you can talk to it with no typing required.

The friction is almost zero β€” which means it's incredibly easy to just... keep going. One more follow-up question, then one more "ooh, what if I tried it this way."

Opening one more tab and starting another thread.

I've caught myself spending 45 minutes in a conversation with Claude or ChatGPT then walking away with something only marginally better than what I had at the 10-minute mark. The tool kept suggesting new directions.

πŸ€– Want me to try a different angle? How about a shorter version? What if we added a story here?

And being the curious people-pleaser I am I kept saying yes.

Of course it's not the AI's fault, but the tool made it really easy to feel productive without actually finishing anything.

This reminds me of a concept from the book Atomic Habits by James Clear. He draws a line between being "in motion" and taking action.

  • Motion is planning, strategizing, researching.
  • Action is the behavior that actually delivers an outcome.

Paraphrasing his examples...

  • If you go to the gym and ask about getting a personal trainer, that's Motion. If you step under the bar and start lifting weights, that's Action.
  • If you outline 20 ideas for YouTube videos you want to make, that's Motion. If you actually record and publish one, that's Action.

Here's the distinction:

Motion makes you feel like you're getting things done, and in some cases the steps you take may even be necessary. But ultimately you're just preparing to get something done. You'll never achieve your goal until you start taking Action.

ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini are the greatest enablers of Motion that have ever existed.

For YouTube specifically, you will get zero results until you start publishing videos.

But before hitting record you can get stuck researching camera gear, rewriting your script five times, brainstorming 30 video ideas, generating thumbnails, outlining a whole content calendar, redesigning your backdrop, planning outfits...

All of that can feel like serious progress, but none of it will get you to your goals alone.

To be clear, I'm not saying to stop using AI. It's part of how I can run this business in 20 hours a week. But I've started putting a limit on how long I'll go back and forth before I just ship the thing.

Worth asking about the next time you've been chatting for a while...

"Is this process actually getting me toward my goal?"

HIGH LEVERAGE TOOLS πŸ‘¨πŸ»β€πŸ’»

AI Thumbnail Generator

I've been playing with a paid tool that will "watch" your YouTube video, then create a quality thumbnail in seconds.

The technology is still improving, but here's one it made for me with no edits:

If you want to try it out the free trial includes 10 free thumbnails.

FROM THE COMMUNITY πŸ™Œ

Wins Of The Week

Loving the wins of all sizes from our Done By Lunch community this week - I can relate to the second one! 😁

  • I was able to get ready for a trip/conference with urgency but not panic….which is something new for me. πŸŽ‰
  • Stopped myself and didn’t buy 3 domain names simply because a β€˜cool idea’ popped into my head. πŸ˜†
  • Had a really great experience at an in-person networking event this week. I was so close to cancelling entirely, but I’m glad I pushed myself a little to get out there. πŸ‘

Celebrating what's going well is easy to forget when you're busy and stressed, so always make time to do it.

BEHIND THE SCENES πŸ‘€

Can Claude Edit My YouTube Videos? πŸ€”

That's what I'm trying to figure out for a new video and I may be seeing the future in action!

High Leverage NOT Hustle Last weekend I invited my 12-year-old to go on a bike ride that included getting ice cream. πŸ˜› He got excited, but said he wanted to ride his scooter instead. I reminded him that it would be SIX miles (almost 10k) round trip and much harder on a scooter - but he insisted he'd be fine. About 8 minutes in, he started complaining that his hands were hurting. I suggested we turn around, but he wanted to keep going. Five minutes later: One leg was sore AND blisters were...

High Leverage NOT Hustle Do these sound familiar? β€œThe truth is…” β€œIn today’s world…” "Not X. Not Y. Just Z." If they do, you are either using AI to help you write content, or you're reading a lot of content from other people using ChatGPT to write. And there's one big danger in doing this... But first, let me be transparent... I use AI to help me write content. πŸ™‹πŸ»β™‚οΈ So I am NOT bashing the practice. If you consider AI to be a better writer than you, why wouldn't you use it, right? But the...
